Blue Protein Smoothie Bowl

August 7, 2017

We have smoothies all the time around here, but we rarely have smoothie bowls.  Honestly, it’s just a thicker version of a smoothie dumped into a bowl.  The fun part is you can add tons of toppings.  So, instead of drinking your breakfast through a straw, you can add some crunchy stuff such as homemade granola or make it protein packed with hemp.  With this blue protein smoothie bowl, you can start your day with loads of antioxidants and enough protein to keep your blood sugar from dropping in a couple of hours.

This was a lot of fun to make.  I felt like I was decorating my food.  And if I’m going to share my breakfast with the world, it’d better look good right?

So, I’m not completely dairy free, but if I have too much it can upset the tummy a bit, so when I make a smoothie, it’s always with a milk alternative.  This time I tried flax milk with added protein.  Really it doesn’t make a difference, you don’t taste the milk in a smoothie anyway.

Now get out the blender and make your 5 minute breakfast!  As usual, pour the milk in first using the side of your blender bowl as your measuring cup.  This has 1/2 cup of flax milk vs the 1 cup I use for smoothies.  It makes it a bit thicker.

Then, throw in everything else.  If you want an antioxidant packed smoothie, use lots of berries.  This one has 1/2 cup of blueberries and blackberries.  Next, your frozen banana (to keep it cold, warm smoothies are kinda gross).  Then for protein, add a healthy tablespoon of homemade cinnamon almond butter.

Lastly, for a bit of sweet, just a teaspoon of maple syrup.  This is optional.  The banana adds a lot of sweetness.

For the toppings, just add what you like!

You can keep bags of frozen berries and bananas stocked up and never worry about what’s for breakfast.  And, you don’t have to make it look perfect.

Happy Eating!
