Years ago, I was watching Oprah and she was raving about this turkey burger she tried. She said it was the best burger she’d had and even shared the recipe. I immediately downloaded it and I’ve been making it ever since.
But, there were quite a few ingredients in it. For the sake of time and sanity I’ve streamlined the recipe over the years so it’s much easier, but kept the key ingredients. I can’t tell a difference in taste at all and I can throw it together much quicker.
I’ve made this for a few people and it’s always a hit. It’s also our go to for warm weather grilling. It’s light, healthy and tastes delicious! There are a couple of funny ingredients, but we make these burgers so often, I just keep them as staples in our house.
First thing you do is get your green apple and peel and dice it to about 1/2 inch cubes. Slice 1/8 cup worth of scallions thinly.
Now, heat a nonstick pan with a teaspoon of olive oil on medium heat.
Throw in your apples and scallions.
Cook for 7 minutes or so until the apples are softened.
Set the apples and scallions aside to cool a bit.
Meanwhile, mix 2 lbs of ground turkey with 2 teaspoons of salt, 1 teaspoon of fresh ground pepper, 1 teaspoon of chipotle Tabasco, juice of one lemon and the key ingredient…1/8 cup of mango chutney. We like mango. Now, mix in your cooked apples and scallions.
By the way, when it comes to turkey, I like the fattier kind. Don’t get the 99% fat free or they’ll be too dry.
Form into patties and salt and pepper each side. We always have one cute little one for our girl! She doesn’t like it on a bun, so it doesn’t matter what size hers is.
Grease your grill really well with non-stick cooking spray and turn on to medium-high until hot. About 10 minutes.
Throw your patties on the grill and cook around 7 minutes and flip.
Until they look like this.
Cook 5-7 minutes on the other side.
While they’re cooking, broil your whole wheat buns for a couple of minutes to toast. Don’t walk off and forget about them. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve burned the buns!
Put your cooked patties in your buns with a dollop of chutney and thin slices of purple onion.
You’re all set! Happy grilling!
